Gotta Vote!

I don't touch on politics much in this blog because I really don't consider myself much of a political person, but we are getting close to a very historic election. One can get dizzy trying to keep up with the polls, but it really doesn't matter much right now. Next Tuesday, we'll all be watching anxiously to see how everything will turn out. I voted for the Obama/Biden ticket. I consider myself a middle-ground Democrat who leans a bit to the left, but I couldn't with any kind of good conscience vote for McCain/Palin. Not after what we've gone through for the last eight years. Besides, I think I would be doing my gay sisters and brothers (and myself) a disservice by voting Republican. Why would I support a party who made gay marriage an election hot-button issue? It's not the case this time around, since the economy is in the toilet, but gay marriage is an issue in many state elections next week. Propositions to put same-sex marriage bans into state constitutions are on the ballot in California, Florida, and Arizona. So if you're in one of these key states, please, please, please be sure to vote against the amendment to put same-sex marriage bans into the state constitution. That wretched amendment passed here in Texas and I'm still sick about it.

So, be sure to get out the vote next week! :-)

I liked Kinky Friedman's quote on gay marriage. "I support gay marriage because I believe they have right to be just as miserable as the rest of us!"

I like that one, too.

I plan to vote no for two reasons.

The first reason is because of you. How do I rate the opportunity to be married to the man I love and you don't? Is it the fact that I am a woman and you are a man? Yes. It's because you were born with a dangly part and happen to love a person with a dangly part. I don't have a dangly part but I love someone who does. And yes, you have the right to be as miserable, or as happy as I am. I would love for you to be able to marry the man that makes your heart go pitter pat.

The second reason is a fabulous government teacher that I had in college. He made me think and I love that! Amendments are for how we want our government to run. Amendments are not for how we want our citizens to act. To include that as an amendment is just stupid. If it were on the ballot as anything else, I would still vote no because it is just wrong.

So whether my reasoning is right or wrong, I'm still voting no. So, hopefully, the people of Florida are not as stupid as we have been portrayd to be and will allow marriage between two people who love each other.

Obama is a socialist pig, but I still love you!

I am sending you a copy of the email I sent the McCain-Palin Campaign regarding the sickening comments Gov. Palin made about a week ago. She actually said she thought there should be a federal ban on gay marriage. WHAT??? I scolded the Repubs roundly for the practical reason that in a tight election, now is not the time to be irritating undecided or independent voters. The Turbo Christains are the bane of our party. What with the economy in the toilet and the multitude of other serious problems our country faces now is not the time to be worried about whom is married to whom. If you are LUCKY enough to find true love, all the best to you and what business is it of mine to comment on it. I can not understand why gay marriage is an issue which threatens so many people. TJ was the sperm donor for my friend Scarlett and her partner Heather to have a child. Obviously, families come in all shapes and sizes and what ever shape your family takes, it should be respected. After all, HATE is not a family value. I do want to point out that Obama is not for gay marriage either although he supports something like civil unions. In my mind, seperate is not equal and to me gay marriage is about supporting equal rights and equal access (to employer benefits and tax brakes). It is the new civil rights issue of this time. Although usually I do vote for folks with an R in front of their name (for me it boils down to whom I think will keep the most money in my pocket), I will never support legislation of any type which is exclusionary. I voted no for the 2006 ammendment to the GA Constitution which specifies marraige as something only between men and women. I think we fight an uphill battle whatever your politics are in gaining widespread acceptance of this issue, but talking about it is an important first step. As I have said before, most of the best people in my life are gay and I love and respect them one and all, but I still early voted for McCain because at this point in my life, I cannot vote for, or not vote for any canidate based on a single issue. I do pay attention to my represenatives on the state and local level and email them to let them know what I think. I will continue to encourage them to at best, make gay marriage the equality issue it is, or at least, make it a non issue in our platform. Kudos to my Gay, Lesbian, and Transgendered Brothers and Sisters in Bondage! Francie :-)

Everyone -- thank you for your comments and support of gay marriage. This is just one of the reasons I cherish you all. I try not to be a single-issue voter; I really do. The worsening economy and the ongoing war are also extremely important, and when it comes down to it, really more important right now. I think I just have such a bad taste in my mouth (no pun intended) from our last administrations that it would have to be a pretty damn good candidate to make me vote Republican. While Obama supports civil unions, I don't think he is in support of a federal ban on gay marriage. There have been so many sound bites and pundit reports that it's so easy to lose track.

Anyway... I'm glad that you all are getting the vote out. Remember what they told us in school: if you don't vote, you don't get to bitch. :-)

Love to all -
Scott

And in a way, it's a shame Kinky Friedman isn't our governor. If ever there was a governor's name meant for Texas, it's Kinky Friedman. That's the best name since Ima Hogg.
